All Saints’ Day: The Communion of Saints

The Season After Pentecost 2026 at

St. John the Divine

Hello, Reader!

This Sunday, November 1, we celebrate All Saints’ Day with a Rite II Holy Eucharist led by Deacon Nate Irvine at 9:00 AM.

We give thanks for the whole communion of saints, from those the whole church knows to those known only to God and to the people who loved them.

FIRST READING – Revelation 7:9–17
John sees a great multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language, robed in white and standing before the throne and the Lamb. They have come through a great ordeal and washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. The Lamb will shepherd them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

PSALM 34:1–10, 22
The psalmist vows to bless the Lord at all times and testifies that God answered him in his terror. He invites us to “taste and see that the Lord is good,” and assures the saints that those who seek the Lord lack nothing good.

EPISTLE – 1 John 3:1–3
See what love the Father has given us: we are called children of God, and that is what we are. The world may not recognize us, but we are God’s children now, and when Christ is revealed, we will be like him. Hope in that future shapes how we live today.

GOSPEL – Matthew 5:1–12
Jesus goes up the mountain and teaches the Beatitudes, blessing the poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek, the merciful, the pure in heart, and the peacemakers. The saints are not those who avoided hardship but those who lived these blessings faithfully.

On this day, we remember those we love who have died and hold fast to the promise that we are part of this great communion. May we follow the saints in lives of faith, mercy, and hope.
