This Sunday, August 9, we celebrate the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost, with Deacon Nate Irvine presiding at 9:00 AM.
These readings explore the nature of God's presence and the courage required to step out in faith. They teach us that God meets us in silence, offers peace to the faithful, and calls us to trust even when we are afraid.
FIRST READING – 1 Kings 19:9–18
Exhausted and terrified, Elijah flees to a cave. God asks what he is doing there. Elijah complains that he alone is left, zealous for the Lord, while Israel has abandoned God's covenant. God tells him to stand on the mountain, for He is about to pass by. A great wind splits mountains, an earthquake shakes the ground, and fire rages—but God is not in any of them. After all the power and spectacle, there is a sound of sheer silence, and in that profound quiet, Elijah encounters God. He wraps his face in his mantle and listens.
PSALM 85:8–13
The psalmist listens for God's word of peace for the faithful. Salvation is near to those who revere Him. In one of Scripture's most beautiful images, "Mercy and truth have met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other." These divine attributes do not conflict but embrace one another in harmony.
EPISTLE – Romans 10:5–15
Paul teaches that righteousness from faith is neither distant nor difficult to attain. The word is near us—on our lips and in our hearts. If we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved. There is no distinction among people; the same Lord is generous to all who call upon him.
GOSPEL – Matthew 14:22–33
The disciples struggle in a boat battered by waves and wind. Early in the morning, Jesus walks toward them on the sea. Terrified, they think they see a ghost. Jesus says, "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid." Peter asks to come to him on the water, and Jesus invites him: "Come." As Peter walks on the water toward Jesus, he notices the wind, grows frightened, and begins to sink. Jesus immediately catches him and asks, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" When they get into the boat, the wind ceases, and those with Jesus worship him.
These readings invite us to encounter God in silence and stillness, to trust His promise of peace, to recognize that faith is accessible to all, and to step out boldly, knowing that even when we doubt and falter, Jesus will catch us.
