The Season of Epiphany

St. John the Divine

Hello, Reader!

This Sunday, the 4th Sunday after the Epiphany, we will explore God’s upside-down kingdom, with Mother Jenn McCombe officiating at 9 am for the Holy Eucharist (Rite II).

Reflection on the Readings for the 4th Sunday after the Epiphany 2026

Join us as we explore God’s upside-down kingdom!

Old Testament – Micah 6:1-8

Micah presents a dramatic courtroom scene in which God brings a case against His people. In response, the people ask what religious offerings will please God—thousands of rams, rivers of oil, even their firstborn children? God’s answer cuts through these inquiries: What the Lord requires is simple and profound: to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.

Psalm 15

Who can dwell in God’s presence? The answer describes a person of integrity who leads a blameless life, acts righteously, speaks the truth, and keeps promises even when it is difficult. Those who uphold these principles “shall never be overthrown”—their foundation is secure because it is built on righteousness.

Epistle – 1 Corinthians 1:18-31

Paul contrasts worldly wisdom with the wisdom of God revealed on the cross. To those who are perishing, the message of the cross seems foolish, but to those who are being saved, it is the power of God. God intentionally chose what the world considers foolish, weak, and lowly to shame the strong, so that no one can boast. Christ alone is our wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.

Gospel – Matthew 5:1-12

Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes, blessings that challenge conventional wisdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, and the peacemakers. Even those persecuted for righteousness are blessed. When his disciples are insulted and falsely accused, they should rejoice, because their reward in heaven is great.

Reflection

These readings highlight God’s radical reversal of worldly values. God desires justice, kindness, and humility more than elaborate sacrifices. God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom; the cross reveals God’s power. Jesus blesses those the world considers weak and lowly. As Mother Jenn McCombe celebrates the Eucharist with us today, we are challenged to embrace God’s upside-down kingdom, where the last are first, the weak are strong, and the cross is victory. What does the Lord require? To do justice, love kindness, walk humbly with God, and live by the values Jesus teaches.
