The Season After Pentecost 2025

St. John the Divine

Hello, Reader!

Reflection on the Readings for the 2nd Sunday of Advent 2025

Isaiah 11:1-10 – Isaiah prophesies a Messiah from Jesse’s lineage who will be filled with God’s Spirit, bringing wisdom, understanding, and justice. He will defend the poor and judge righteously. The prophet describes a beautiful vision of the peaceable kingdom where natural enemies—wolf and lamb, leopard and kid—live together in harmony, and violence ends completely.

Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19 – This royal psalm calls for a king who embodies God’s justice and righteousness, especially in defending the needy and rescuing the poor. It envisions a reign of prosperity, peace, and lasting righteousness that extends beyond any earthly monarch to point toward the ultimate King whose justice will prevail.

Romans 15:4-13 – Paul reminds us that Scripture provides hope through perseverance and encouragement. He calls for unity within the diverse Roman church, urging Jews and Gentiles to accept one another as Christ has accepted them. Quoting several Old Testament passages, Paul affirms that God’s redemptive plan has always included all nations, ending with a prayer that God fill believers with joy, peace, and abundant hope.

Matthew 3:1-12 – John the Baptist appears in the wilderness, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy and calling for urgent repentance because the kingdom of heaven is near. Dressed like Elijah, he confronts religious leaders sharply, warning that true repentance requires action and that ancestral claims offer no salvation. John announces one much more powerful who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire, separating wheat from chaff.

Central Theme: The second Sunday of Advent shifts from vigilant waiting to active preparation through repentance. John the Baptist’s wilderness cry echoes Isaiah’s vision: the coming King demands both personal transformation and communal justice. We prepare the way by turning from sin, welcoming the outsider, defending the vulnerable, and living into God’s peaceable kingdom—where the Spirit-filled Messiah brings justice for the oppressed and judgment for the unrepentant, establishing lasting peace among all nations.
