This Sunday, July 26, we celebrate the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost!
These readings highlight the importance of wisdom, God's unfailing love, and the immeasurable value of the kingdom of heaven. They invite us to pursue what truly matters and to trust that nothing can separate us from God's love.
FIRST READING – 1 Kings 3:5–12
God appears to Solomon in a dream and offers him anything he desires. Rather than asking for long life, wealth, or military power, Solomon requests an understanding heart to discern between good and evil so he can govern God's people wisely. God is pleased with his humble request and grants him not only wisdom but also abundantly more. No one like Solomon has ever been before him, and none will arise after him.
PSALM 119:129–136
The psalmist longs for God's commandments with passionate desire. "Your decrees are wonderful; therefore I obey them with all my heart." God's word gives light and understanding to all. Moved to tears by compassion for those who do not keep it, the psalmist asks for mercy, guidance, and steadiness in following God's law.
EPISTLE – Romans 8:26–39
The Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us when we do not know how to pray. God is for us, having given His own Son for our sake. Paul declares with absolute certainty that nothing—neither hardship, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, nor anything else in all creation—can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
GOSPEL – Matthew 13:31–33, 44–52
Jesus teaches parables about the kingdom of heaven. The mustard seed grows from the smallest seed into a great tree, and yeast transforms an entire batch of dough. The kingdom is like a treasure so valuable that one sells everything to possess it, or like a pearl of great price. A net catches fish of all kinds, which will be separated at the end of the age—the good gathered and the bad cast out.
These readings invite us to seek wisdom humbly, trust in God's unfailing love, and recognize the kingdom of heaven as so precious that it transforms everything else. It starts small, grows beyond our expectations, and will ultimately be vindicated and perfected.
