Hello, Reader!
This Sunday, August 23, we celebrate the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost with Morning Prayer at 9:00 AM. These readings focus on identity, purpose, and the nature of the Church. They remind us to remember our roots, recognize our gifts within the body of Christ, and confess who Jesus truly is.
FIRST READING – Isaiah 51:1–6
Isaiah urges the people to remember their origins: "Look to the rock from which you were hewn and to the quarry from which you were dug." He points them to Abraham and Sarah, showing how one person became many through God's blessing. Though the heavens will vanish like smoke and the earth will wear out like a garment, God's salvation will endure forever. "My deliverance will never be ended."
PSALM 138
The psalmist gives thanks with a whole heart, praising God's name and word. Though the Lord is high, He cares for the lowly and sees the haughty from afar. When trouble surrounds us, God keeps us safe and extends His hand against our enemies. "The Lord will make good his purpose for me; O Lord, your love endures for ever; do not abandon the works of your hands."
EPISTLE – Romans 12:1–8
Paul urges us to present our bodies as living sacrifices—our spiritual worship. Be transformed by the renewal of your minds so you may discern God's will. The Church is one body with many members, each with different gifts according to the grace given to us: prophecy, ministry, teaching, exhortation, generosity, leadership, and compassion. Each gift contributes to the whole.
GOSPEL – Matthew 16:13–20
Jesus asks His disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" When they share various opinions, He presses further: "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter answers, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus declares, "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven."
These readings invite us to reflect on our identity as God's people, to trust in God's eternal plans, to recognize our role in the Body of Christ, and to confess firmly that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God.
