Hello, Reader!
This Sunday, November 8, we’ll celebrate the Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Pentecost, with Deacon Nate Irvine presiding at 9:00 AM.
As the church year draws to a close, these readings invite us to reflect on watchfulness, honest prayer, and hope amid grief.
FIRST READING – Wisdom of Solomon 6:12–16
Wisdom is radiant and unfading, easily found by those who seek her. She hastens to make herself known and waits at the gate for anyone willing to rise early. Even more striking, she seeks those worthy of her, meeting us on our ordinary paths and in our daily thoughts.
PSALM 70
A short, urgent prayer from one who is poor and needy: “Be pleased, O God, to deliver me; O Lord, make haste to help me.” The psalmist names real opposition, yet the psalm’s heart is joy for all who seek God. It gives us permission to bring our impatience and need honestly before God.
EPISTLE – 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18
Paul tells a grieving community not to grieve as those who have no hope, because Jesus died and rose again, and God will bring with him those who have died. Paul concludes, “Therefore encourage one another with these words.” Coming after All Saints’ Day, these verses are especially tender.
GOSPEL – Matthew 25:1–13
In the parable of the ten bridesmaids, five are wise, and five are foolish. All of them fall asleep while waiting, and the difference lies in what they prepared. When the bridegroom arrives, the ready go in to the banquet. Jesus closes with a simple charge: “Keep awake, therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
These readings call us to a watchful hope shaped by ordinary faithfulness: prayer, worship, generosity, and care for our neighbors. We do not know the day or the hour, but we know the One who is coming. May we keep our lamps trimmed and encourage one another along the way.
